The cures that nourish

cover of The cures that nourish

A project that accompanies families in the first 1000 days of life.

The care that nourishes is the new project promoted by the City of Bologna together with the Bologna USL Company and funded as part of the National Program PN Metro Plus and Southern Medium Cities 2021—2027 aimed at families residing in the Municipality of Bologna who are expecting or with sons and daughters from 0 to 2 years old.

With a view to prevention and promotion of well-being, the project focuses on proximity, accompaniment and support to families, promoting the continuity of care, social integration and the early detection of vulnerability factors, with a view to preventing and promoting well-being.

First 1000 Days Desk

At the Center for Families in Via de' Buttieri 5/a, there is a listening and orientation space with free access, including telephone and digital, integrated with the Family Information of the Municipality of Bologna. The desk provides information on pregnancy, pediatric visits, vaccinations, parental leave, bonuses, socio-educational services and activities dedicated to new parents.
The reception is guaranteed in Italian and English; on request it is also possible to activate the cultural mediation service. Information materials are also available in multiple languages.

Hours: Monday 9.30-15.30; Wednesday 9-14 and 14.30-16.30; Friday 13.30-15.30.

Home support

The heart of the project is home intervention, aimed at overcoming physical and relational barriers that often limit families' access to traditional services.
The project involves the activation of a team specialized in supporting the first 1,000 days of life, consisting of two midwives, two educators and cultural mediators — selected from among the figures formed by MondoDonna and Cuore di Mamme — which works in an integrated way with the Center for Families, Health Services, Territorial Social Services and Educational Services.
This action is being tested in two areas of the city, in the Navile and Borgo Panigale - Reno districts.

Strengthening parenting skills

Thematic meetings and small group courses are planned to support parenting skills, promoting care practices appropriate to the child's development and valuing the sense of self-efficacy and the abilities already present in parents.
The project works in close connection with the realities of the Third Sector, associations and cooperatives active in the area, also through neighborhood homes, which accompany families on the path of birth and growth, offering recreational and cultural activities and opportunities for socialization.

Cultural mediation and inclusion

For migrant families, a linguistic-cultural mediation service is guaranteed in all project activities, including through the production of multilingual information materials, to facilitate access to services and the comparison between different educational and care models.

Operator training

A strategic action concerns the training and updating of the social health and educational professionals involved, with modules dedicated to responsive parenting, cultural decentralization and the early detection of risk factors, to build a shared and integrated approach and promote the exchange of good practices.
