Bologna joins the regional experimentation The school that starts together
Registrations open from 9 a.m. on Monday, July 6 to Thursday, July 16. The project will start on August 31 and will continue until September 11
Offer a welcoming, safe and stimulating environment to girls and boys who attend primary school in the weeks before returning to class, responding concretely to the needs of reconciling life and work times of Bolognese families. This is the objective of the new experimental educational project The School That Starts Together, which will start next August 31 and will continue until September 11, 2026.
Applications for registration can only be submitted online, by filling out this Google form active starting at 9 am on Monday, July 6 until 11:59pm on Thursday, 16 July 2026.
The initiative, promoted and funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region within the integrated territorial strategies of the ATUSS areas (urban transformative agendas for sustainable development), sees the City of Bologna at the forefront of implementing a measure that, for this year, involves 42 municipalities and unions in our region on an experimental basis, with the ambition of becoming structural starting from the 2027/2028 school year.
For the Municipality of Bologna, a maximum amount of 523,354.00 euros has been allocated by the Emilia-Romagna Region, which will allow families to let their sons/daughters participate in the project completely free of charge.
A widespread and collaborative service
Thanks to the fundamental availability and collaboration of the city's educational institutions, the service will be active in 22 school complexes evenly distributed throughout the municipality. The activities will take place in the morning slot, from 8 to 13, from Monday to Friday.
The project includes a rich program of extracurricular educational, laboratory and sports activities.
The activities will be managed by qualified individuals and will also include the direct management of the cleaning of the complexes involved, ensuring the highest standards of safety and care for the spaces.
Who is it for and how to access it
The recipients of the service are students who, in the next 2026/2027 school year, will attend primary school, from second to fifth class, at the Comprehensive Institutes that will take part in the experimentation.
Access to the service will take place on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority guaranteed to students with disabilities.
To ensure optimal management and the highest quality of the educational offer, the Municipality has defined a maximum ratio of one educator/educator for every 20 users.
Inclusion and educational continuity
Particular attention is paid to the inclusion of girls and boys with frailty. Support for autonomy and communication will be guaranteed with the additional regional resources provided for the full participation of every girl and boy.
This experimentation integrates the large package of summer opportunities already put in place by the municipal administration - from summer camps 3-14 years old to projects for teenagers, to summer stays - in addition to the opportunities offered by schools with ministerial funds, confirming the city's commitment to supporting families and transforming schools into open, living and community spaces all year round.
How to participate
The school that starts together project will be activated in the weeks 31 August-4 September and 7-11 September 2026 only in the comprehensive institutes that will participate in the experimentation: each participating comprehensive institution will activate the service in one or more primary schools.
An application for enrollment can be submitted if the student in the 2026/2027 school year will attend a primary school belonging to one of the comprehensive institutes participating in the project and if they will attend a primary school class from second to fifth.
If the comprehensive institution attended by the student is not among those participating in the project, it will not be possible to send the application for enrollment.

The other opportunities in the city
This experimentation goes hand in hand with all the other opportunities in the area, organized not only by the City of Bologna, but also by individual schools.
In fact, until school resumes, registrations for summer camps affiliated with the City of Bologna remain open. You can apply for registration on places still available: the list is updated every week.
Each comprehensive citizen institution, then, organized activities in schools thanks to the funds put in place by the Ministry of Education and Merit as part of the project called Agenda NORD - National Program 21-27. The activities present in the individual schools can be consulted on the websites of the comprehensive institutes.
“An important trial in the city that will increase support for families in the first weeks of September - says school advisor Daniele Ara -. “Thanks to the Region for the opportunity: after this experimentation, we intend to work to integrate more and more, for next year, summer camps, open schools and the activities that comprehensive institutions offer independently. Thanks to all our school autonomies for the collaboration.”
